  • In the Beginning:
  • February 25, 1949: Richard Fliehr was born in Memphis, Tennessee.
  • 1967: Richard Fleihr was a high school state heavyweight wrestling champion in Wisconsin.
  • Richard Fleihr moved to Edina, Minnesota, where he grew up and went on to play offensive guard in college at Minnesota.

    Getting into the Business - AWA:
  • 1971: Ric Flair recieved his training from the legendary Verne Gagne and debuted in professional wrestling in the AWA in 1972..
  • ~~~Ric Flair battled George "Scrap Iron" Gadaski to a 10-minute draw in his 1972 pro debut for the AWA..
  • Ric Flair left the AWA, after about two years in the company and headed for the NWA..

    NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling:
  • 1974: Ric Flair moved to Charlotte to work for booker Wahoo McDaniel in the Mid Atlantic territory.
  • He turned his hair blond, wore very colorful trunks, and adopted the "Nature Boy" personality and image.
  • Although he later became known for the figure four, Flair won most of his matches with an elbowdrop, or with a top-rope kneedrop.
  • May 17, 1974 - Mid Atlantic: Ric Flair defeated Les Thatcher (This was one of Flair's first matches in the territory)..
  • "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair beat Paul Jones to win his first singles title, the NWA Mid Atlantic Television title.
  • October 4, 1975: Ric Flair was in a plane crash with Johnny Valentine, Bob Bruggers and "Mr. Wrestling" Tim Woods.
  • ~~~Flair broke his back in 3 places. Modern medical science said that he'd never wrestle again.

    NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling (Return):
  • Instead of thanking the fans, Flair tore up several "get well" cards on TV
  • January 1976: Ric Flair came back to wrestling and continued his feud with Wahoo McDaniel.
  • November 1976: Ric Flair began teaming regularly with Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and had a feud against Ole & Gene Anderson, another team of heels.
  • December 1976: Flair & Valentine defeated The Andersons for the NWA World Tag Team titles but lost the belts back to them the following May.
  • Summer 1977: Ric Flair had a feud against newcomer Ricky Steamboat, which saw Steamboat beat him for the TV Title.
  • Ric Flair's allies were Valentine and Blackjack Mulligan, and they all feuded against McDaniel, Steamboat, Paul Jones, and the Andersons.
  • July 1977: Ric Flair won his first US Heavyweight Title from Bobo Brazil
  • ~~~There were hints of dissension between Flair and former champ Mulligan.
  • ~~~Before they could wrestle each other, Flair lost this belt to Steamboat in October.
  • October 1978: Ric Flair & Greg Valentine regained the NWA World Teag Team titles from the Andersons, but were stripped of the belts in April of 1978.
  • April 9, 1978: Ric Flair defeated Mr. Wrestling to capture the United States Heavyweight title for a second time.
  • ~~~This time, Flair's disrespect caused Mulligan to become a fan-favorite and chase after Flair.
  • ~~~Flair destroyed Mulligan's cowboy hat, but Mulligan tore up one of Flair's fancy robes.
  • ~~~After Flair sent a series of bounty hunters after him, Mulligan never beat Flair for the title.
  • Fall 1978: Flair renewed his war against Ricky Steamboat
  • ~~~Flair attacked Steamboat and scrubbed his face across the studio floor
  • ~~~A week later, Steamboat attacked a dressed-up Ric Flair and ripped his clothes off
  • ~~~December 18, 1978: Ricky Steamboat beat Ric Flair to capture the United States Heavyweight title in Toronto.
  • ~~~April 1, 1979: Ric Flair defeated Ricky Steamboat to regain the United States Heavyweight title.

    NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling (The face turn):
  • Spring 1979: Flair had a falling out with heel Paul Jones, who had also betrayed Ricky Steamboat
  • The dream team of Flair & Steamboat tried (but failed) to defeat Paul Jones and Baron Von Raschke for the World Tag Team Titles.
  • Summer 1979: Flair was attacked and insulted by "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers, who then became the manager of heels such as Jimmy Snuka, Big John Studd, and Ken Patera.
  • August 12, 1979: Ric Flair reunites with Blackjack Mulligan, and they beat Paul Jones & Baron von Raschke for a brief reign as World Tag Team titles
  • ~~~Flair even vacated the United States title to show his allegiance to Mulligan
  • Ric Flair began chasing the new US Champion Jimmy Snuka and defeated him for the belt on April 19, 1980.
  • June 1980: Ric Flair agreed to team up with Greg Valentine against Jimmy Snuka and The Iron Sheik
  • ~~~Valentine turned against Flair during the match and broke Flair's nose with a cane
  • ~~~Weeks later, Flair stripped Valentine's clothes on TV, just as Steamboat had done to him a year earlier
  • July 26, 1980: Greg Valentine defeated Ric Flair for the U.S. Heavyweight title.
  • November 24, 1980: Ric Flair defeated Greg Valentine to reclaim the U.S. Heavyweight title for his 5th reign as champion.
  • January 27, 1981: Rowdy Roddy Piper defeated Ric Flair for the U.S. Heavyweight Title.
  • ~~~Piper was already TV Champion, and he used a foreign object to win the match
  • ~~~Piper later insulted Flair by trying to give him the TV belt in a gift box
  • ~~~Instead, Flair showed up with the foreign object and swore revenge
  • ~~~In reality, Piper befriended Flair and was the best man at Flair's wedding.
  • For the next several months, Flair fought off Piper and his hired goons: Greg Valentine, Ivan Koloff, and The Andersons.

    NWA: Flair becomes The Man :
  • September 17, 1981: Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes in Kansas City to win the NWA World Heavyweight title for the first time.
  • As expected of the NWA Champion at the time, Flair traveled a very busy schedule, defending the title in many different territories on a daily basis
  • His challengers included Ted DiBiase, Austin Idol, Bruiser Brody, Ole Anderson, Dusty Rhodes, Paul Orndorff, Tommy Rich, Billy Jack Haynes, Kerry Von Erich, and Jerry Lawler.
  • July 4, 1982: WWF World Champion Bob Backlund battled NWA World Champion Ric Flair to a double DQ at the Omni in Atlanta.
  • Christmas Night, 1982: An unforgettable night in Flair's war against Kerry Von Erich
  • ~~~They were scheduled for a title match in a steel cage at Christmas Star Wars
  • ~~~Freebird Michael Hayes was a second referee inside the cage while Freebird Terry Gordy guarded the cage door
  • ~~~Flair kept arguing and shoving Hayes, so Hayes tried to help Kerry win the match
  • ~~~Kerry refused to cheat, so he was attacked by the Freebirds
  • ~~~This angle kicked off the years-long Freebirds-Von Erichs war
  • February 9, 1983: The Midnight Rider (a suspended Dusty Rhodes under a mask) beat Ric Flair for the World title.
  • ~~~When the President of the NWA told the Midnight Rider to remove the mask, the title was returned to Ric Flair.
  • June 8, 1983: Harley Race defeated Ric Flair for the World Title in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • ~~~Race then offered a bounty to anyone who could eliminate Flair
  • ~~~During a rematch, Flair was attacked by his "best friend" Bob Orton Jr and Dick Slater
  • ~~~Flair announced that injuries from the attack would force him to retire
  • ~~~Flair soon changed his mind and attacked Slater and Orton with a baseball bat
  • Starrcade 83, November 24, 1983 - Ric Flair defeated Harley Race to recapture the NWA Heavyweight Title.
  • ~~~This was the first time the NWA Title changed hands in a cage match
  • ~~~The guest referee was former champion Gene Kiniski
  • The title changed hands two more times the following March.
  • ~~~March 21, 1984: Harley Race once again defeated Ric Flair to regain the World title in New Zealand.
  • ~~~March 23, 1984: Ric Flair defeated Harley Race in Singapore to capture his 3rd reign as World champion.
  • ~~~Neither of these switches were recognized by the NWA at the time
  • ~~~Similar controversial "quick" switches, involving Jack Veneno, Victor Jovica, and Carlos Colon occurred a few other times in Flair's early reigns
  • May 6, 1984: Kerry von Erich defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA World title in Irving, Texas.
  • ~~~This card was held in honor of David Von Erich who had passed away in February
  • May 24, 1984: Ric Flair beat Kerry von Erich for the title while on tour in Japan.
  • Ric Flair managed to keep the World Title for over two years.
  • ~~~His next batch of challengers included Dusty Rhodes, Tully Blanchard, Ricky Steamboat, Wahoo McDaniel, Stan Hansen, Sergeant Slaughter, and Ron Garvin
  • June 30, 1984: Dusty Rhodes beat Flair in a non-title match at Lords Of The Ring to win a ceremonial ring.
  • Starrcade 84: Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes by referee's decision in the main event
  • ~~~The referee was Joe Frazier, who felt that Dusty was bleeding too heavily over his eye
  • ~~~The promotion claimed that the winner would win one million dollars

    Jim Crockett's World Champion:
  • By 1985, Flair was primarily wrestling for Jim Crockett's Mid-Atlantic promotion, which would later combine with Georgia to form World Championship Wrestling later in the year
  • Depending on his opponent, Flair would appear to be a fan-favorite or a rulebreaker
  • Summer 1985: Flair has a feud against Ivan and Nikita Koloff.
  • ~~~The Russians used a chain to attack Flair
  • ~~~Nikita even attacked announcer David Crockett
  • July 1985: With David Crockett as guest referee, Flair beat Nikita Koloff in the main event of the first Great American Bash.

    The Horsemen before they were The Horsemen:
  • Ric Flair feuded with US Champion Magnum TA
  • ~~~Flair lured TA into the ring and then humiliated him with a beating
  • ~~~A week later, he insulted Magnum by offering him a new suit, so he could "look like a champion"
  • ~~~Magnum tore the suit to shreds and KO'd him with a belly-to-belly suplex
  • ~~~Flair challenged Magnum to last ten minutes in a match with him
  • ~~~When Magnum lasted the full ten minutes, he was attacked by Ole and Arn Anderson, who claimed to be Flair's cousins
  • Ric Flair finally turned heel in Atlanta on September 29, 1985
  • ~~~Flair had finished defeating Nikita in a cage match, but he was attacked by the Russians again
  • ~~~Dusty Rhodes entered the cage and rescued Flair, who seemed angry about the save
  • ~~~Ole and Arn Anderson then locked themselves in the cage and helped Flair demolish Dusty's ankle
  • ~~~In an interview not long after this, Flair hinted at a partnership with Magnum's arch-enemy, Tully Blanchard
  • October 2, 1985: Ric Flair wrestled to a double count-out against AWA World champion Rick Martel on in Tokyo, JAPAN.
  • ~~~They teamed up later on in the same Japanese tour
  • November 28, 1985: Ric Flair defended against Dusty Rhodes in the main event of Starrcade 85
  • ~~~The referee was knocked to the outside of the ring, so The Andersons quickly interfered
  • ~~~Rhodes gained a pinfall when a new referee arrived, and was announced as the new champion
  • ~~~The following week, it was announced that Flair was DQ'd by the original referee, so the title remained with Flair
  • Flair formed a formal alliance with The Andersons, Tully Blanchard, and Blanchard's manager, James J Dillon
  • Ole Anderson was injured on New Year's Day. As a result, Arn, Blanchard, and Flair became known as The Three Horsemen for a few months
  • Flair had some close matches against Ricky Morton, so the Horsemen attacked him and ground his face into the locker room floor
  • Ole made a comeback in June of 1986, officially forming The Four Horsemen

    The Horsemen Years:
  • Flair agrees to defend the World Title over a dozen times while on the Great American Bash Tour
  • ~~~The challengers were Wahoo McDaniel, Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff, Ron Garvin, both members of the Rock n Roll Express, and both Road Warriors.
  • February 2, 1986--MoscaMania: Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes in Hamilton, Ontario..
  • July 25, 1986: Dusty Rhodes defeated Ric Flair in a Greensboro cage match for the NWA title.
  • August 9, 1986: Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes to regain the NWA title in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • ~~~Tully Blanchard had injured Dusty's knee with a chair just two nights earlier.
  • ~~~Instead of getting pinned, Rhodes lost the title when he blacked out while in the figure-four leglock.
  • In another rematch, Dusty's valet Baby Doll turned on him to side with Flair
  • Fall 1986: The Horsemen perpetrated the infamous parking lot assault of Dusty Rhodes
  • Flair then had to deal with Nikita Koloff, who had become a fan-favorite after Magnum TA's career-ending injuries
  • November 27, 1986: World Champion Ric Flair beat US Champion Nikita Koloff by DQ at Starrcade 86
  • February 15, 1987--MoscaMania 2: Nikita Koloff defeated Ric Flair by DQ in Hamilton, Ontario..
  • Early 1987: Ole Anderson left the Horsemen but was replaced by Lex Luger
  • Flair had a series of excellent matches against Barry Windham, including a victory at the 2nd annual Crockett Cup tournament
  • Wargames was first held at the 1987 Great American Bash
  • ~~~Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff, The Road Warriors, and Paul Ellering beat The Four Horsemen and James J Dillon in the first WarGames match on July 4
  • ~~~The War Machine (Big Bubba Rogers in a mask) replaced Dillon for a rematch on July 31, but the result was the same.
  • Flair had a war against The Garvin Family that same summer
  • ~~~Flair had set his eyes on Jimmy Garvin's valet Precious
  • ~~~Flair tried to lure her away with a fur coat, but she just took the coat and left
  • ~~~Flair beat Jimmy Garvin in a cage match during the Bash Tour on July 11
  • ~~~This victory earned him a date with Precious
  • ~~~When "Precious" arrived at Flair's door, "she" turned out to be Ron Garvin who knocks out Flair
  • September 25, 1987: Ron Garvin beat Ric Flair for the NWA World title in Detroit, Michigan.
  • November 26, 1987: Ric Flair defeated Ron Garvin to regain the NWA title in the main event of Starrcade 87.
  • December 1987: Lex Luger left the Horsemen and begins to seek Flair's title. Sting became another new challenger.
  • March 27, 1988: Sting fought Flair to a 45-minute draw at the first Clash Of Champions
  • A few weeks later, Barry Windham turned heel and took Luger's spot in the Horsemen.
  • Soon, all Four Horsemen were champions, as Windham won the US Title and Blanchard and Anderson held the Tag Team Titles
  • July 10, 1988: Flair defeated Lex Luger by a controversial referee's decision at the 1988 Great American Bash PPV
  • In September, Blanchard and Anderson left the NWA, so Flair and Windham were simply called "The Horsemen"
  • December 7, 1988: Flair and Windham defeated The Midnight Express at the fourth Clash of Champions
  • Starrcade 88: Flair finally gained a pinfall victory over Lex Luger in the main event.

    The Dragon Returns!:
  • February 1989: Flair and Windham were challenged to a tag team match against Eddie Gilbert and a mystery wrestler
  • Ricky Steamboat turned out to be the partner, and he pinned Flair
  • The Horsemen quickly lost their identity
  • ~~~Dillon had already been managing Butch Reed
  • ~~~Kendall Windham joined the group in February
  • ~~~Dillon was fired and replaced by Hiro Matsuda
  • ~~~Matsuda called his group the Yamazaki Corporation
  • February 20, 1989: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat defeated Ric Flair to capture the NWA title.
  • Within a few weeks, Matsuda and the Windhams all disappeared, leaving Flair to stand on his own
  • April 2, 1989: Flair lost to Steamboat in an hour-long three-falls match at the sixth Clash Of Champions
  • May 7, 1989 - Wrestle War: Ric Flair defeated Ricky Steamboat to reclaim the NWA title in Nashville.
  • ~~~After this match, Terry Funk (who was acting as one of 3 judges) attacked Ric Flair and piledrove him through a table!.
  • ~~~Flair was out of action until July, but his old enemy Sting fought for him against Funk.
  • July 23, 1989: Flair returned to action as a hero at the 1989 Great American Bash
  • ~~~He defeated Terry Funk, who was assisted by Gary Hart
  • ~~~The Great Muta attacked Flair after the match, but Sting ran out to help Flair
  • October 28, 1989: Flair and Sting teamed up at the first Halloween Havoc.
  • ~~~It was a Thunderdoom cage match with Bruno Sammartino as guest referee
  • ~~~Sting & Flair (with Ole Anderson) beat Funk & Muta (with Gary Hart)
  • November 15, 1989: Flair beat Funk in an "I Quit" match at the ninth Clash of Champions
  • ~~~As he promised, Funk shook Flair's hand after losing
  • ~~~After the match Flair and Sting were attacked by The Great Muta and Lex Luger (who had become a rulebreaker again)
  • Arn Anderson made a return to the NWA and reformed his team with Ole to help out Ric Flair
  • December 13, 1989: Flair competed in the Iron Man tournament as part of Starrcade 89.
  • ~~~Flair pinned The Great Muta and fought Lex Luger to a draw
  • ~~~Sting pinned Flair in the final match to win the tournament
  • ~~~Instead of attacking Sting, the Andersons and Flair congratulated him
  • 1986-1989: Ric Flair averaged 34 minutes per-match. In that span he had 19 matches that lasted longer than 50 minutes.

    The New Four Horsemen:
  • Ric Flair, Sting, and The Andersons entered 1990 as fan-favorite Horsemen but it did not last long
  • February 6, 1990: It all fell apart at the tenth Clash Of Champions
  • ~~~Sting refused to forfeit a future title shot against Flair, so the other Horsemen attacked him
  • ~~~Flair, Arn, and Ole (subbing for Sting) won a cage match against Buzz Sawyer, Great Muta, and Dragon Master
  • ~~~Sting tried to climb the cage but severely damaged his knee in the process
  • February 25, 1990: Flair defended his title against Lex Luger at WrestleWar 90
  • ~~~Sting came out on crutches to cheer for Luger
  • ~~~Luger was counted out when he left the match to save Sting from the Andersons
  • Spring 1990: The Horsemen gained more members when Barry Windham returned and Sid Vicious replaced the retiring Ole Anderson
  • July 7, 1990 - Great American Bash: Sting defeated Ric Flair to win the World Heavyweight Championship in Baltimore.
  • After losing many rematches against Sting, Flair began teaming with Arn Anderson to focus on the tag team titles held by Doom
  • ~~~They fought to a double-countout at Halloween Havoc 90.
  • ~~~Flair beat Butch Reed at the 13th Clash of Champions to gain Teddy Long's services as a chauffeur
  • ~~~Flair was attacked and injured when Long drove him to a deserted area

  • March 21, 1991: Tatsumi Fujinami defeated Ric Flair in controversial fashion to capture the World title.
  • ~~~The decision was later reversed and the WCW Title returned to Flair.
  • ~~~However, the National Wrestling Alliance recognized Tatsumi Fujinami as the NWA champion.
